I am a volunteer in TES for more than half a year now and I believe that I somehow know the Greeks and the Greek culture, but for me Tsiknopempti which happened last Thursday was something very unexpected and a crazy but great experience!
Tsiknopempti or in English something like smokes Thursday is a day where people in whole Greece grill meat. In Greece it is a custom before Easter to not eat meat for forty days and so this day could also be seen as something as a opening to this time. For that it is a day for the Greeks to celebrate and we celebrated with them.
Firstly everything looked like a normal school day. The children went for four lessons in their classrooms and learned maths, language, religion and physics like usual. At twelve, the day changed! The association of the parents organized that the school got boxes full with freshly grilled Souvlakia. Beside the many meat sticks, we ate also potato fries, small salads and bread.
After everyone ate a lot of really unhealthy but so so delicious food, the children went home and we TES volunteers were one more time happy to be able to experience these parts of the Greek culture!
