Kambos

My school visited the village of Kambos, which is said to be one of the most beautiful villages of Chios island. In this article I will write about my experience of Kambos and the experience of the school trip where I accompanied the second primary school of Vrontados as an assistant teacher.

The trip started with bringing the children from the school building to the buses. It was my responsibility to watch over the first graders while they were walking to the bus, because their class teacher would join us later in the day and they were with out supervision. It was a little of a challenge, because they really didn’t want to walk in line and we walked on a open street with cars driving. After we got safely into the bus and placed all the children in their seats we checked if the seat belts were locked. The bus drive was nice and I was talking to one of the students during the ride. He was giving me a little island tour while we were driving. When we arrived in Kambos we made a break and gave the children time to eat and relax.

Two tour guides introduced each other and we split the children in two groups. The first, second and third grade went together and the fourth, fifth and sixth grade I went with the first grade accompanied by their teachers that had joined us on the bus ride. I followed the tour with the children and took pictures. We started with visiting beautiful gardens with giant trees and wonderful mosaics and garden gates.

After that we visited an old traditional hotel that actually holds four stars. It was empty because the time we visited it was the off season, so we had the garden off the hotel just for our self. We visited a old watering machine that was used to water the orangery that is right next to the hotel. It still works and the tour guide gathered all the children to move the part that is usually pushed by an animal and make the water machine work. The buckets were turned the wrong way around as the guide explained so there was actually no water flowing.

After that we walked through the orangery and got some oranges for tasting. They tasted awesome. Different from the usual we have at home. More fresh and sour. I accompanied the children back to the bus and checked their seat belts again. We drove back to school and dropped the children off back at the school building. That was the end of my trip to the beautiful village of Kambos.

It was a very nice experience, because of the difference to the normal workday and also because of the responsibilities I had to carry with watching over the children. My impression of Kambos is that it is a really beautiful village with beautiful buildings and gardens. Even for me as someone that normally doesn’t really care about sight visiting it was a very nice trip around the island of chios.
