Tsiknopempti in the primary school of Nenita

Tsiknopempti (in Greek “Τσικνοπέμπτη “) translated to English means the “Smelly Thursday” or “Barbecue Thursday”. This Thursday got its name from the smell of grilled meat in the air and is part of the traditional celebrations for Carnival in Greece.

In general in Greece there exists the three weeks of Carnival. Those are called “Prophoni” – the Preannouncement Week, “Kreatini” – the Meatfare Week and “Tyrofagou ” – the Cheesefare Week .

On Tsiknopempti it is tradition to eat large amounts of meat.
This is what we did also in the primary school of Nenita. In the morning we went to a big football field. There we had enough space to play with the children and to run around with them. We danced and did a lot of ball games. As a break the whole school, including the teachers, celebrated Tsiknopempti together by enjoying eating fresh souvlaki with bread together.
The weather was very beautiful and warm which reminded us of spring and made this day even more great.
