The 3rd primary school of Vrontados made a really interesting excursion to an beautiful church in Vrontados: They went to the church of Agios Nikolaos so the priest could explain to them the meaning of the holy Prosfora bread, that is given to them during a service and represents the body of Jesus.
Therefore the priest of Agios Nikolaos showed the students the special Prosfora bread and explained the stamp that is pressed into the dough before baking. It consists of various religious symbols and letters and the priest took the time to explain each one of them to our students. He also explained the historical background of these signs and explained the order, in which the bread gets cut.
But he didn’t only explain, he also took the time to show the children how exactly the bread, the wine and the water gets prepared before the ceremonies and what the different cloths are for.
The children were very interested in this procedure and had many questions. It was nice for them to understand the background of the things that they see each time when they go to the church.
It was a really interesting excursion and everybody – teacher, volunteers and students – learned something new about the Greek orthodox church that day!
