On the 24th of October, all the classes of the local primary school of Vrontados went for an excursion. For the fourth grade the destination was the Maritime Museum of Chios, which is located in a traditional Chios architecture style building from the beginning of the 20th century.
We had the amazing opportunity to accompany the children in these excursions, to assist the teacher in keeping the children save and to learn more about the maritime history of this unique island.
As Chios Island is one of the biggest shipping centers and many ship-owners and sailors live here, this museum is of special importance! For the children here the sea, ships and sailing are part of family history and everyday life.
One of the main features of the Museum is a small, but significant collection of the local Cultural Union of Vrontados PEKEV, which consists of models, parts and instruments of ships, and most significantly of portraits of sailing- and steamships belonging to inhabitants of Chios.
The beautiful ceiling paintings amazed the children.
The basics about how “η πυξίδα” (the compass) works was explained, as this is a very important tool in order to navigate your position out on the sea!
The children also had the chance to try to make some of the nautical knots.
In the end of the tour, each child received a diploma for the knowledge they have gained from this visit.
