In the beginning of every new year the head of the Orthodox Church of the Island – who is Archbishop Markos – visits the schools. On this occasion the teachers and children prepare a special celebration, the Archbishop blesses children, teachers, and the school and cuts “Vasilopita”.
This is a traditional cake with a coin hidden in the cake on the occasion of the celebration of the new year, connected with the legend of Agios Vasilis – the saint that was famous because of his kindness and charity.
Throughout this experience our volunteers had the opportunity to get to know the Greek culture and its traditions better and to assimilate more with the local community. We documented the event by filming and taking pictures.
