Exploring the North of Chios

This Sunday we decided to discover another part of the island. Since we have not seen much of the north yet we went to Kardamyla which is the biggest village of the northeast in Chios with around 4000 inhabitants. As most of the villages along the cost Kardamyla has an old part which is a bit higher on the mountain and a new part close to the sea. In the past pirates used to rob the villages along the sea, so it was of advantage to built the village a bit away from the coast, while today it is not needed to be protected from pirates.

We arrived in the lower village which is also called Marmaro in the morning and wandered around the streets. During these hours of the day there were not many people up yet and we enjoyed the calmness. The peaceful atmosphere was even enhanced by the weather. Some clouds were hanging over the sea and the sun only show through from time to time. This was actually the perfect weather to go on a little hike. So after we gained enough impression of Kardamyla we made our way to the next village a bit more in the south Lagkada.

We walked along the street which lead us through the forest with nice views of the sea from time to time. During the hike we had lots of fun by discussing different “what if questions” and all agreed that a guinea pig and a lion would be a cute animal combination. Because we packed some snacks we did a little break in the middle of the hike and arrived in Lagkade after 2 hours.

There we were suprised by the amount of people who were outside. The restaurants next to the sea all were opened and many people enjoyed some fish. Hungry and convinced by the delicious looking food we sat down in on on the cafeterias and ordered some Greek food. Especially the Calamari tasted great. Because the sun came out we switched to another cafe and relaxed there in the sun. Very full and happy we returned back to Vrontados. It was really nice to be able to visit another place and eat at a restaurant after the COVID-19 restricted us so much.
