Volissos is a nice little village 40 km away from the main city of Chios. Perfectly located on a very steep mountain with a castle above the city the inhabitants of Volissos were able to spot enemies like pirates early enough to prepare for defense.
The castle was built in the medieval times having six circular towers and a trapezoid shape. Because of its good location the byzantine castle was used as the main defensive fort to protect the whole northwestern area of the island. The view from the mountain is breathtaking and if you are not too afraid of heights and willing to climb a little bit you will enjoy an even better view from the top of one of the old castle walls.
While walking through the village you easily get the feeling of being in maze as the streets are very narrow and short with many sidecuts, inclinations and rises. Behind every corner there is always something special to see like old empty stone houses or a very nice view so take your time while exploring the little medieval village.
The village also has its own school only a 10 minutes walk away from the main square. The school is pretty easy to find as it is the biggest building of the village and very impressive as it is made out of beautiful grey stones and surrounded by a nice garden with many trees.
Volissos is a very beautiful and calm place. All the old houses maintain the medieval flair of the village. You can perfectly relax at the main square while drinking a coffee in one of the restaurants and take a day off. All in all Volissos is a place that is definitely worth visiting while being on Chios.
