Now that the school is finished and summer holidays have started, all the kids start playing on the playgrounds at the schools regularly in their free time. Our objective as volunteers is to spend our time with the children, help them if they have any problems and invent and play games with them. So from Monday to Friday we spend part of our afternoon at different schools and entertain the kids and take a supervising role, yet we can play just like friends with each other.
As soon as we arrive at our schools, kids are already waiting there for us, ready to play some games. Quickly, a lot of children engage in many different activities.
Since the language barrier is quite big, we often have to explain things with sign language and sometimes some of the children can speak a little bit of English and translate into Greek to their friends.
Also, one day the kids decided to clean the whole place of all the rubbish many kids just drop onto the floor and we managed to fill many trash bags. Almost all of us helped together and collected tons of trash and in just a bit of time, we had cleaned the whole schoolyard.
All in all, it’s a pure joy to play with the kids and watch them learn new things every day, see them communicate and play with each other and the fact that you also have an influence and can help them when they need help makes you feel like you are a part of them as well.
