On Tuesday, 14th of May, the three primary schools of Vrontados competed against each other in a self-organized sports tournament taking place at the stadium next to the first primary school. In weeks of preparation ahead, the sports teachers formed a team (or in case of Agios Georgios two, as it is the biggest school of the village) in the sports soccer, volleyball and basketball.
It was the first time the three schools competed against each other and you could really see the excitement on the children’s faces. The younger students supported their teams with banners and you could hear them cheering far away. The third primary school of Vrontados even had their own little cheerleader group out of girls from fourth grade.
The role of us volunteers was to put the whole event on record by taking pictures, and one of us was even allowed to function as coach for the soccer team, as the P.E. teacher was busy being the referee for the volleyball game. But of course, we also did our best to support our schools, as it also became a little competition between us volunteers, whose school would win the tournament.
So, what were the results? And who of us volunteers could celebrate with the children? The answer is, all of us. The third primary school of Vrontados won the basketball competition, the second primary school the volleyball contest and one of the teams of the first primary school the football tournament.
It was great to see all of the children playing together and having fun, as we volunteers don’t only know the children from ‘our’ schools, but also from the other schools as we met some of them during the summer activities, and of course from the stories of each other.
