On the 13th November 2018 the 3rd and 4th class of the 3rd primary school of Vrontados had an excursion to the Center for Environmental Education Chios (Κπε Χιου – Κέντρο Περιβαλλοντικής Εκπαίδευσης).
Upon making it to the destination with a private bus, we had a short introduction outside, before we continued inside.
In a corner decorated like the forest the children had the opportunity to guess which of the objects displayed, dried branches, leaves, pictures of animals and birds, metal poles and other object, actually belong in nature. A piece of wood was also passed around, providing the kids with the chance to guess the age of the tree, according to the annual rings.
The next part of the excursion was a Power Point presentation which informed us about flowers and animals, which can be found in the nearby area.
Small refreshments in form of a sandwich and bottle of water were provided during a break, which the kids also used as opportunity to play to their hearts contents.
After the intermission we continued outside. Among other things the children got the chance to experience the natural aroma of plants and herbs by rubbing the leaves between their fingers. Once we found an open space in the forest the pupils were handed microscopes and binoculars with which they were able to have a closer look at their surroundings and dried leaves, cones, etc.
Before the excursion ended with a puppet theatre performance, presented by one of the teachers and employee of the Center for Environmental Education Chios, the children created gifts for the fairy that is believed to live in that area by using resources provided by nature. Therefore they were mainly made out of branches, stones, dried leaves and cones.
Our volunteer’s job was to ensure the children’s safety, make sure no one gets lost and take pictures for the schools website.
