On the 31st of October 2018 people with special needs visited the 3rd primary school of Vrontados.
The day’s program was divided into two parts, in order to adapt the activities to the children’s needs.
The first part involved the pupils of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. After a short introduction to the topic, they had the chance to experience being handicapped first hand. The task given was as followed. One blindfolded person sat on a chair with their classmates lined up behind them. The next step was to guess who of their friends had stepped forward and said hello. After the task was accomplished the blindfolded child was guided through a given course. At the end the kids sat in a circle with one of the visitors and reflected what they had learned and enjoyed about the task given.
The program for the older students, including 4th, 5th and 6th grade, looked a little bit different. In the beginning they were introduced to Greek sign language and animated to try with the presenting person. Children as well as teachers gladly participated and tried their best to mimic the gestures. After everyone was able to more or less spell the alphabet using sign language the children were paired up for the next exercise, which was pushing your partner in a wheel chair across the school’s football field.
