At the 7th of June the kindergarten and the primary school went to excursion together and of course we volunteers participated in the trip into the south of Chios.
When we arrived at the school yard in the morning, we were a bit surprised about so many people waiting there with their backpacks. But the solution was found quickly. The children will go to excursion together with their parents. Three busses were needed to transport our huge group. Our first stop was Mesta, a Medieval village.
In Mesta all the parents were searching for a nice place in the shadow to drink a coffee and start relaxed in the day. At the same time the children were full of energy and ran around the central square with their balls or jumped from the stairs of the church. Together with them we looked inside the church and let them made crazy styles with our hair.
At 11 o’clock we continued our trip and went to the Sykias cave near Olympi. In small groups we visited the cave and had a guided tour. We learned about the creation of the stalactite cavern and the names of the different stone shapes. In the cave it was very dark and sometimes a bit slippery, so we had to be careful, that no child slipped. Inside the cave was a pleasant cool temperature, and we got a small shock when we came out in the hot air again.
For lunch, we went afterwards to Limenas. While the parents were sitting down in a restaurant close to the harbour, the children were taking of their shows and splashed about the low water. We collected some beautiful stones and shells, feet the fishes and watched starfishes and sea urchins. After enjoying ice cream in the afternoon, we went back to Nenita.
It was a nice idea to invite the parents to the excursion, too. So they and the teachers had time to discus in a relaxed atmosphere the past school year and the children had a whole day to play together. Also, the small children of the kindergarten got the knew the older ones or made their friendship deeper. This is a very important aspect of this excursion because after summer the older children of the kindergarten will go to the first class and become schoolchildren.
