Even trough the children in the kindergarten do not walk alone to school, they should know some basic traffic regulations.
During the lessons at the beginning of May they learned different road signs, and we volunteers crafted together with the children own traffic lights and talked about the meaning of the different colours. Moreover, they heard about the right behaviour of walking at a street and every childed learned which number to call in an emergency. All the children were very euphoric in learning something new and found a lot of small mistakes in their previous daily life.
Because the right behaviour in the road traffic is very difficult and it is important to practice it also practically we made an excursion to Dafnonas where we visited a bicycle park. When the bus picked us up in the morning all the children (and of course their mothers, too) were very exited and a bit nervous. Already on the way we looked what road signs we saw out of the window and a teacher explained their meanings. When we arrived in Dafnonas we were confused because of the door of the park was closed. So we searched for a place in the shadow and started the trip with our breakfast. We were amazed when we saw many small ants taking away our breadcrumbs. But soon a police car arrived and two friendly officers welcomed us.
First they wanted to check our knowledge. So they showed us different road sign and asked for their meaning. Good that we practised before, so it was easy for us to answer the questions. Afterwards they read some statements about traffic rules, and we decided if they are true or wrong.
Now it was time to practice how to move at the street. We dived our group in two parts. While the first group practised how to cross a street by looking left-right-left, the other part of the group could drive a small round with the bike. Even trough they prepared the bikes with supporting wheels, it was a very rickety experience, because it was the first drive with a bike for the most of the children. We volunteers helped much by putting on the cycling helmet, climbing on the bikes and making the first movements.
Afterwards we thanked the police officers very much for their time and the nice day. During the way back to the kindergarten, all the children were very tired and many felt into sleep. It was a very nice and exiting day and hopefully we will never forget the traffic rules we learned during this week.
