It is carnival time in Greece. During the last days the children of the Second Primary School of Vrontados prepared masks and different handicrafts already. At Friday, the last school-day before the long weekend, our school had a great carnival celebration.
Until 10 o’clock in the morning each class had a small program on it’s own. The parents prepared delicious food such as pizza, cheese pie or even self-made chocolate-cake, so that the children could take breakfast together. Everybody wore a pretty costume, even the teachers. We had some little princesses, police-women and men, witches, pirates,… every child was dressed differently. It was a lot of fun to show the costumes to each other and to act fittingly to them.
After breakfast the whole school went outside to the schoolyard. Music was played everywhere, the children were running around, dancing and singing or playing football. Paper-streamers and confetti flew around and in the classrooms they covered the whole floor. The school looked very different this day. Together with the teachers we volunteers joined the children. We danced to Greek and English pop-songs and made a polonaise. Seriously, we never enjoyed our work so much.
It was very nice to have one day, just celebrating and speaking. Everyone was laughing and having fun. Carnival in this primary school on Chios-Island will stay in our minds for sure.
