In the end of March, all the classes of our school had the chance to visit the mastic museum in Pyrgi. A first excursion was organised for the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th grades and the week after, the 1st, the 5th and the 6th grades visited the museum.
Pyrgi is in the south of Chios Island, 30 km far from Vrontados. We took the bus, for a trip of an hour trough the mountains and the wild tulips fields. When we arrived to Pyrgi, we directly go to the main place of the village to drink juices and to eat sandwiches, pitas, pizzas, ice creams… under a beautiful sunny sky. Just enjoying life !
Then we visited the village : Pyrgi is known as the painted village of Chios because of his houses with black and white geometric decorations. The houses in the border of the village create a real wall, like a fortress to protect the inhabitants. The children were curious to touch the decorated walls of the houses.
After this time, we went to the mastic museum, a very recent one, inaugurated 1 year ago. It is lost in the mountain and surrounded by mastic trees, alos called skinos (Σχίνος). One part of the museum is outside, in the middle of theses trees. The rest of the museum is really modern, with just what you need to see and to learn. Each part has a video to present useful information about the story of the mastic, how people work to collect the mastic, what kind of products are made in the factories and how, etc. The children were very interested from the beginning to the end !
