2nd Primary school of Vrontados: Excursion to the Fire department and soccer fields of Chios City

Although it’s already October and autumn started last week, the weather is still sunny on Chios Island. Pupils and teachers of the Second Primary School of Vrontados took advantage of the warm temperatures for an excursion to the soccer fields and the fire department, which is placed next to the airport.

Students from class 1 to class 6 had a lot of fun while competing against each other in soccer matches or playing volleyball on one of the three courts.
Obviously, age, size and gender were not important for the children, as boys and girls aged 6 to 12, were enjoying sports together. As you can probably notice, team spirit was in the focus of today’s trip.

All pupils had the opportunity to take part in an activity of their own choice. For that reason, they improved their self-reliance as well as understanding the lesson of sportsmanship which means treating other players with respect and fairness, applying a sense of ethics to the game.

In addition to sport activities, the classes 3 – 6 were invited to visit the local fire department for an introduction of the fire fighters’ methods in case of an emergency. The children were shown all of the equipment and the uniforms the fire fighters are obligated to wear, and they also had the chance of trying on helmets; some of them were even glowing in the dark!

Along with the explanation of the work outfit, the children were given a tour of the fire truck, featuring many various apparatus. With heavy excitement, the pupils also got to climb into the front seat of the fire truck, an experience they will cherish for a long time.

Another memorable moment of the day contained a practical demonstration on how to use the water hose. One after one, the children held the tube, flushing several liters of water in the matter of seconds! The experience led to many smiles, although the pupils also understood the seriousness of a dangerous situation. In case of a fire, water is needed quickly.

It has been a successful day, with many new impressions. They learned about the importance of the fire station on the island, together with having fun! We very much enjoyed the presence of the children and their enthusiasm towards the excursion.
