Last Thursday, 3rd of March 2016, in Greece has been celebrated Tsiknopempti is the Thursday during Carnival or the “Greek Mardi Gras” period which marks the begining of the last weekend that observant Greek Orthodox Church members can “legally” eat meat. It’s also called
Smoke Thursday”, “Smoked Thursday”,”Barbecue Thursday” or “Grilled Thursday” by some.
We have celebrated Tsiknopempti in the 2nd Primary school of Vrontados :
Some parents bought a lot of meat, water and juice for the children, while others brought the barbecue to grill the souvlaki: skewers of meat with lemon and oregano accompanied with bread, really delicious!
After the 4th hour of school started the party, after 5 minutes a queue of 70 children in the playground, everybody with some money as offer for the sweet parents that prepared everything, waiting with nose up in the air smelling the awesome grilled souvlaki. Souvlaki is a normal and typical way to eat grilled meat, but when you have a souvlaki barbecue at school it’s an all other thing:
children since 1 hour before are so excited not to follow the lesson and screaming “souvlakiiii!!!!”. It was really a beautiful and unexpected atmosphere that day in the school.
