Field trip to the port and Homer’s stone – 2nd Primary School of Vrontados – 19th of June 2020

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic all the schools of Chios were closed for safety measures from the 11th of March to the 31st of May 2020. The primary schools and kindergartens reopened on the 1st of June for a month, therefore extending the school year a little longer.

On the 19th of June 2020, the 5th class of the 2nd Primary School of Vrontados went on a field trip. We met up with the children directly at the port, next to Daskalopetra. They learned about the different boats and the different types of fishes they can catch.

We then walked up to what is called Homer’s Stone. It is said that Homer leaned on the stone while teaching his students. Just below is the Sanctuary of Cybele. It worships nature, back in the time there was a river passing near by, therefore making it the perfect location, close to the water and to the forest. Scientific say that the stone was actually a statue of Cybele but with time and erosion it became unrecognizable.

From this height, we have a nice view over the port and can catch sight of Turkey. Their teacher made them imagine what it must have looked like before. Each child made a drawing and then taking Homer’s place on the stone, showed the other children while explaining why they drew it like that.

We then walked back down to relax at a café while the children played around before going back to the school.
