The additional building for the local primary school was finished at the beginning of the school year. So in cooperation with the headmaster and teachers we thought about possible school yard paintings which will be fun and educating for the children, but also not too difficult for us to draw. In small groups we decorated the yard with different games using water paint.
We chose different games, such as “Twister”, or hopping games, always including numbers or letters and different colors in order to have an educational effect.
While painting we enjoyed the great panorama of Vrontados: While you can see the impressive mountains surrounding the city when looking up, the blue water with some beautiful ships laying in the harbor of Chios could be seen when looking down. We all really enjoyed this way of working!
When the bell for the children’s break rang they were running out and looking what we were painting. They carefully observed our progress, and tried not to touch the wet paint. They also said things like “Bravo!” or “μου αρέσει” (Greek for “I like”), which motivated us even more!
When we finished our work for the day, we looked at our art work, and even though it was not completely finished everyone looked with a proud smile on their face at what we have achieved that day.
After a few more days of work, the school yard now does not only feature the ‘old’ and reworked school yard paintings, but also a friendly numbers-dragon, a grub with the Greek letters, a twister game and the famous smurf-family, giving the children the opportunity to vary their games for the break even more.
