One of the most important goals of our organizations is to teach and to share with children from the local community knowledge about Europe and our volunteers’ native countries.
As in the summer, we hosted four people from Poland we decided to prepare a presentation about this country – its history, culture and traditions in order to make this country, which is situated so far away from Greece, more known and familiar for the Greek children. We presented it in the 2nd Primary School of Vrontados to the 5th and 6th grade.
The presentation started with a movie prepared by our volunteers, about Polish landscapes, main cities, important people and traditional food. The next step was a short lesson of the Polish language, and afterwards we taught and sang together the Polish equivalent of the song “head, shoulders, knees and toes” so the children learned the names of the parts of the body in Polish.
The proceeding step was the projection of the “Animated history of Poland” – a short film prepared for the Expo 2010 in Shanghai, with the explanation of one of the Polish volunteers. After the history lesson we made a small dance workshop – the children had opportunity to learn the traditional Polish dance – “krakowiak”.
A short quiz about Poland evaluated the presentation.
It was very successful and the children, teachers and volunteers enjoyed it, so we decided to repeat it about one month later for children of other grades.
The next country that we presented was the native country of three of our volunteers – Germany. We prepared it based on the same structure that we worked out for the presentation of Poland – so the children learned about the culture, traditions, history, sang a song and learned basic expressions in German language.
