On the 22nd of May the students from 5th and 6th grade from the school Panagia Erithiani went to the south of the Island to the dripstone cave “Σπήλαιο Συκιάς” of Olympoi.
In the morning we started with the bus to drive to the south. The bus ride took around an hour and led through the nice small streets in the south with a nice view on the landscape. Once arrived at the caves, the students split up into two groups. The 6th graders were the first ones to enter the cave.
To go to the cave we first had to walk down a long gangway and quite some stairs. Then before we could enter we had to pass through a lock, that keeps the humidity in the cave. In the cave you have to be silent, you are not allowed to touch the dripstones, and we had to walk carefully to not slip.
The guide led us through the cave and explained about the stalactites and stalagmites. He also asked the students questions, and they could ask theirs. The tour started on the top of the cave. During the tour we descended 30 meters and climbed them in the end on a nice spiral staircase up again. The guide explained to the children, that the cave is 52 meters high, has a constant temperature of 18° C and the humidity is higher than 95 %. If you plan to visit the cave in summer, don’t forget to pack a jacket.
The stalactites and stalagmites are growing everywhere: all the walls are covered, and they grow from the floor and the ceiling. With some fantasy you can see a lot of fun figures, so did the students.
