For this years christmas, the primary schools and the kindergarten of Vrontados prepared celebrations.
In the first primary school of Vrontados, the children of the first class already rehearsed since the beginning of December for a play their teacher wrote by herself. The story was about christmas elves, a sad christmas tree who got happy again and of course Rudolph, the red nosed reindeer. They also cooperated with the music teacher and prepared songs like ‘Jingle Bells’ or ‘Rudolph the red nosed reindeer’ and the arts teacher who made the decorations, costumes and backgrounds with the help of one of us volunteers. Every child had its own costume and at the morning of the last school day, they also got painted on their face to complete the outfit. Apart from helping with the decorations and costumes, our volunteer also helped with preparing the background music for the play. The children prepared it once in front of their parents on the 20th of December and once on the last school day for the other students and teachers.
In the second primary school Vrontados two of our volunteer drew the background for the play of the second grade. The play was about a snowman that came to life and helped the animals he met, by giving food or his scarf. In addition, the volunteers also prepared props for the play like a white box with stars and the costume for the cat and the rabbit. One day before the play, on the 19th, we volunteers helped decorating and preparing the class room of the second grade for the play. It was also our responsibility to clean up and bring back the chairs after the play.
We were allowed to participate in an other Greek tradition by painting the second primary school’s Christmas troll which we converted into a sailor.
In the third primary school of Vrontados the children of the second grade performed a play, including traditional Greek Christmas songs, on the 21st of December. Apart from helping decorate the Christmas tree and boat, which functioned as stage design, the volunteers also helped rehearsing the play the two days before the big performance. In addition we were responsible for the technical components of the play, varying from playing the songs, managing the volume of the microphone, the PowerPoint presentation in the background of the stage and taking pictures. After the play it was our responsibility to clean up and pack away the materials used.
