Athens Polytechnic Uprisings

Due to the “On- arrival”- seminar beginning on the 12th until the 17th of November two volunteers of our project had the unique chance to be a part of this event. Of course they went to the university and the impression they gained there are presented with the help of some pictures in the following article.

Every year, the campus of the Polytechnic is closed for a few days: from the 15th of November which has been the first time when the students occupied the campus the first time until the 17th of Novemeber when all of the Greek schools and Universities get closed.

Students and policians lay down wreaths in the near of the university. There, the names of the involved students of that time are  embriodered on these wreaths who died during the resistance in 1940.

This event ends with a demonstration beginning at the campus and finishes at the United States Embassy. Unfortunately, we were not able to see this demonstration because we had to leave in the evening before to get the ship back to the Island Chios. But these days of preparation for the demontration already stayed and will also stay in the future in our mind because we were really impressed what the Greek people, students and children did voluntaryly for their heroes of the past. They were sitting outside, sharing papers, presenting books and different things to remind of them. In our culture we did not find any historian event which is comparable to this.

What a luck to be there exactly on this date!
