After our Christmas holidays our first excursion back in the school was to the Environmental Centre of Vrontados. We went with our two eTwinning classes and spent a really nice day with them.
When we arrived in the centre one staff member expected us already and started immediately the presentation. We went trough the garden of the centre and he explained a lot of things, including the little river which flew next to the centre. Then we went in the main building and the children listened attentive to what our project manager explained them about photosynthesis. The interactive Power-Point presentation with many pictures and well made explanations pleased and interested the children a lot. Another staff member supported us and offered generously everybody sandwiches, water and coffee for us and the teachers. In the break the children were very active and loved to discover the area around the centre.
For the second part of our excursion we went into the little forest behind the educational centre and the children were separated into three groups. One group should find things from plants, the other group things, that animals left and the last one stuff, which originates from humans. The children were so motivated and found a lot of things so that their little bags, which they got, were really soon full. Fortunately we had perfect weather and the children could enjoy the nature. Amongst other things they learned after that about how to measure the size of a tree without any aids.
We also had the opportunity to see the famous Karagiozis which the centre hosts. The little paper puppets are very traditional for Greece and this centre is the only one in whole Greece which works with Karagiozis in their program.
The last part for the children of this exciting morning was to write down in group work which problems the forest has and what we can do against them. They knew a lot after these instructive hours and wrote down many things.
Then a wonderful morning found its end and together we went back with the bus, which brought us there. Students, teachers and volunteers enjoyed the various program and we really appreciated the opportunity to see this interesting centre.
