Providing educational content for free is the main goal of our organization. There are many ways to share information and one of our ways to achieve this aim is to do presentations at school.
We as a team from all over Europe share our knowledge with the Greek children. In this particular case we are doing experiments with children. Be cause of our Greek audience we prepare the experiments in English and translate the instructions, the explanations and the questions into Greek. Especially as volunteers, we are very aimed to provide non-formal learning instead of standing in front of twenty children just talking. We solved this challenge by preparing experiments to show the children and let the children try on their own. After exploring the experiment and the effects it is for sure necessary to explain, what the children found out. Also by explaining experiments we are aimed to find a way to attract the children’s attention and to make them interact with us. Therefore we are doing a quiz and let our students choose the correct answer. We give three possible answers and display them by using a beamer. The children are asked to go to their chosen answer. The correct answer will be highlighted and the winners are of cause in front of the correct answer.
After doing the seminar with many classes we are not able to figure out, who learned more. On the one hand we are training how to interact with Greek children using their mother tongue, we are learning how to deal with a group of children and last but not least we have to know what we are teaching. One the other hand the children are very motivated to listen to us, be cause in this case they have the chance to correct our pronunciation, by listening, they learn about science and they have the chance to do experiments.
