On the 1st of October 2011, a new project started: a 12 week workshop, taking place each Saturday, offered for free by the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation in which children, aged between 8 and 15 years, are taught all the important subjects around shipping. Parallelly to this, another workshop that recreates, with the help of children, a traditional construction of a wooden boat.
The lectures of the first workshop were held on board of the foundation’s sailing boat, where some of the most well-known professionals of Greece concerning nautical themes taught the children by using the flat screen TV, which is installed on the boat, or by using a projector to show pictures, movies and animations about their topics.
During this workshop our task was to help in the lessons as assistants for the lecturers and the boat crew. We guarded the children on and off the boat, e.g. to keep them from playing near the sea or to help them getting on board. More over, we provided them with hot sandwiches and table water during the breaks. During the lessons we made sure that the children were calm and were following the presentations properly.
Within these 12 weeks, with each Saturday we and the children got to know each other more and more and in the end it was a bit sad to say goodbye.
On the 3rd of March 2012, this project was starting for the second time with a new group of children, but basically with the same lessons held by the same experts and professors from all over Greece, like at the first time.
