Volcano experiment

The school year is coming to an end, so the time for learning is slowly fading and the days get more relaxed for the children. Last Thursday, the first graders of the 1st primary school of Vrontados built together with the teachers and our volunteer two little volcanos.

We started by putting spray foam insulation onto a big plate. The teacher formed a little island, where he put two cups and made hills around them. The next day, after it hardened, the children where allowed to paint it. While the paint dried, we went into the classroom and the children made trees, fishes, sharks and palm trees out of play dough as a decoration for our little island.

We also prepared a mixture out of water, vinegar and food color to represent the lava. After all the preparation, the fun part started. The class went together with the plate outside into the schools garden. We first put some baking soda into the cups and afterwards slowly poured in the prepared mixture, to let the volcano erupt.

It was great to see the children so excited and happy and I think it was an interesting project, which we all enjoyed a lot.
