28 of October 1940, the Greek population rejected the ultimatum of Benito Mussolini as well as handing over Greece to him with the result that the Italians invaded Greece and that the Greek-Italian wars of the winter 1940-1941 started.
This date has become a festive occasion for the Greeks all over the world and every year the Greek community celebrates it as the start of their fight for freedom and maybe also a little bit as a symbol for freedom – the day of the “NO”.
The schools also participate in the festivities of this day and organize separately a small celebration in school on 27 of October, so that they remember the value of this day.
In our school the celebration was organized by the forth class, the children learned to sing songs about this time and presented historic texts and poems which describe the time.
The volunteers helped as well this year in the celebration, we decorated the celebration room but also made a Power Point and a video out of pictures and recordings of this time to show to the children what the time as well as the living and fighting conditions were like.
The next day all the schools of Vrontados participated in a parade. We went there to see them and to encourage them. They were wonderful and we were proud because we knew how much effort they had put into it, as we had the opportunity to participate in their learning progress.
So in the end it is a nice feeling to see every year what strength all the kids put into this celebration and maybe also that we could help them, even a little bit.
