Kiria Sarakosti

The seven weeks of fasting officially begun! That is the reason why Kiria Despina visited the Second Primary School of Vrontados and showed the 2nd and 3rd class how to bake the traditional Kira Sarakosti.
Kira Sarakosti is a small figure baked of bread dough which has seven feet and her hands are folded as if in prayer. Her seven feet each represent one week of the fasting period. Each week one foot gets cut off to count the weeks until Easter. There is a cross on her forehead and she has no mouth indicating that she can’t eat because she is fasting.

Kiria Despina started the baking process by mixing 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of water and 3 cups of flour and kneaded it until it became to a doughy mass. Then she rolled it out and cut out the shape of the woman. Some of the children tasted the mass and followed every step with great interest. Which much precision Kiria Despina added more and more details until she finished by attaching the seven feet.

As last step the figure needs to be baked for 45 minutes. After that Kiria Sarakosti can even be colored with water colors. The students had much fun creating this important tradition and are looking forward to cut the feet of.
