It’s February and Carnival season is coming up, in this context we made carnival masks with the children in the 2nd primary school of Vrontados.
First with the children in 4th and 6th grade, later with the 1st,2nd and 5th grade.
For the 1st grade, we made cat masks for the girls and lion masks for the boys. In order for us to have time to make the mask with the children, we cut and glued for the children beforehand. The children used pencils to decorate the mask, and we helped them glue glitter to the mask when they finished coloring. We also made Whiskers out of DIY pipe cleaners, which we helped them staple onto the mask.
In 2nd grade all the children got the same mask (tiger). The children had to cut the mask out of the A4 paper, to practice their cutting. They glued the mask to hard paper and cut out the shape, we helped them cut the eyes.
With 4th, 5th and 6th grade we made butterfly masks for the girls and an simple mask with pattern for the boys. They could choose to make their own pattern on hard paper, or to stick the mask that we printed on white A4 paper onto the hard paper. Some of the children needed help to cut out the eyes, and some of the children had different head shapes so we had to adjust the eyes. The children could choose witch color they wanted on their feather, and we helped them staple the feather to the mask. We used stretchy rope to tie the mask to their face. For the 5th grade, some of the children used glitter to decorate. The finishing result was very good.
The masks that turned out the best was the masks from the 1st grade, because of all the effects we put onto the masks and the result was very good, this method is recommended.
