Besides the usual subjects like math, Greek and sports, there is also the musical education of the children in the first grade. Since some of us, the volunteers, are able to play some instruments, we try to help as much as we can in these lessons for the children.
In order to do so we assist in the music lessons every Monday, in which we accompany the children’s singing with the piano or the guitar. The songs are mostly in Greek and very simple because of the children’s age, so that we have the opportunity to learn some new Greek words and phrases, too. While we play along with the children, they also learn to trust us and to listen to the speed and height of the notes, and every time we play something new, they are getting better at it.
But it is not only the regular music lessons we help in: There are also the traditional Greek celebrations and festive days, in which we help with our music, like the Celebration of the OXI Day.
