On\nthe 11th<\/sup>\nof June we, the volunteers, had the opportunity to do an excursion in\nthe small village Pyrgi which is located in the central south of\nChios. As soon as we arrived in Pyrgi, all of us were fascinated by\nthe architecture of the houses because the village is also well-known\nas name \u201cthe painted village\u201d. Most of the houses are covered\nwith black-white geometric patterns and are called “Xist\u00e0”.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\nbefore discovering more about the medieval village, we stopped at a\ntouristic shop where we could have a try on the mastic juice.\nThere were two minds\nabout the juice, some of us volunteers liked it, some of us not\napparently. But it was still a nice experience because the place is\nalso pretty famous for the large traditional amount of mastic\nproducing in Pyrgi as well as in the surrounding. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First\nof all, we went to one of the old, small churches in Pyrgi, the\noctagonal church called \u201cAgios Apostoles\u201d.Inside of the church,\nour eyes were immediately admired of the walls which are covered with\nmany old painted frescos showing different saints. Some of us even\nhad a look of the outside of the church and could see how the church\nwas built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterwards,\nwe went further to the small narrow alleys surrounded by the painted\nblack and white geometric painted facades on the walls of the houses.\nWalking through the winding streets, we discovered many cats hidden\nunder cars or just relaxing on some windowsills of the houses. But we\ndidn\u00b4t enjoyed the cats only, there were many bright red tomatoes\nhanging from the walls in order to dry them on the sun. Moreover, it\nmakes a great contrast of the patterns. While walking through the\nstreets we noticed some little arches connecting the houses and there\nwere even bigger ones as a protection from invaders. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later\non, we made our way back to the \u201cPlatia\u201d. Basically, it is the\nmain square of Pyrgi and contains many small caf\u00e9\u00b4s as well as a\nchurch which can be also recognized by its huge tower. Therefore, we\nexplored the outside of the church and enjoyed the view to the\ndecorated facades of the many houses from almost the top of the\nchurch. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We really enjoyed exploring the unique village and learned more about the history of this place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
