During the last week the main topic in kindergarten was the North Pole and the South Pole. The teachers started by showing the location of these areas on our planet to the children. Afterwards they watched a video about animals who only live in the Arctic or Antarctica and learned that for example polar bears and penguins would never meet in the wild. Together as a group the children finally created a poster showing which animals live on which pole.
The next day we focused a bit more on the South Pole with its penguins and every child was able to create their own penguin to take home.
However the main focus in the whole week was on the Arctic and especially the polar bear. Through different stories, videos and lessons the children learned everything about the life of polar bears. Furthermore, the teachers created awareness of the fact that polar bears are endangered and the whole class discussed about possibilities to save the environment and to create less pollution.
As a volunteer I could help prepare the lessons and handicrafts and assist the teachers. In my opinion it was a very successful week because it is never too early to learn about different regions on this planet and to create awareness for the environment.
