After a long and hot summer holidays, it is time to start school again. But due to the current situation of corona school started one week later than actually planned before. Therefore, the students and the children were supposed to go to school on the 14th of September again.
The children and some family members came to the primary school at 10 AM. When we were looking inside of the school building, we were very proud of ourselves what we all, including the teachers, managed during the two weeks of preparation. You could clearly see a difference in comparison to how the primary school looked like two weeks ago.
In the schoolyard, you could see the excitement of every child on their faces. Finally, they can see their classmates again. Therefore, you could watch many children playing some funny games on the playground before the ceremony started. However, it is also a special day, the children of the first class have their first day of school and there were no lessons at all on this day. Slowly, slowly every student arrived at the school, the schoolyard filled up and the head mister of the school spoke some welcoming words and gave the parents some information about the following days as well as about the next school year. Then the new and older students got blessed by two priests. We were supposed to take some pictures of the whole event. However, the children were also supposed to wear a mask and had to keep some distance by standing in front of everybody during the whole ceremony. Due to the virus, the students and the teachers must wear a mask inside of the school building from now on. Consequently, in order to fulfill the corona-restrictions, one of our tasks as volunteers is to point out the hygiene measures to the students regularly.
In conclusion, it was an interesting day, seeing the students for the first time and getting to know the special ceremony implemented by the priests. As the new volunteers of the third primary school in Vrontados, we are looking forward to supporting the teachers and the school as good as we can!
