Yesterday we took part in a really interesting Greek celebration \u2013 the \u03a4\u03c3\u03b9\u03ba\u03bd\u03bf\u03c0\u03ad\u03bc\u03c0\u03c4\u03b7 which means literally translated Smelly Thursday or Thursday of the Smoke of Grilled Meat. On this day they eat Souflaki because they celebrate it as the last day where they can eat meat before they will fast until Easter. The Greek fasting period starts on Rose Monday, the day before the last carnival Tuesday, and takes 48 days until Easter Sunday. Strictly speaking the Greek are not allowed to eat food of animal origin in the fasting period so they eat it on Souvlaki day for the last time.
\nWe spent the day at Daskalopetra with the school. We played with the children at the playground and had lots of fun and of course we got freshly grilled Souvlaki as well. We had to look after the children, we consoled them when they fell and we tried to settle disputes as far as possible.
\nWhile the older children were playing football or just talking and making fun together, the younger ones mostly were on the playground and played for example chasing games.
\nAt 1 pm we went back to the school supporting the teachers to lead the children to the school safely.<\/p>\n
